WE ARE THE ORIGINAL CRAWLSPACE! ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTES! 1. Crawlspace from Boston (?). In late 1987, we played a show in San Francisco with the Lazy Cowgirls. The Cowgirls did an interview at a local college radio station (I forget which one), and spotted a demo tape from a band called Crawlspace with a Boston or other Massachusetts address. 2. Crawlspace from New Orleans. Probably in 1988, local rock writer Mike Snider told me he saw a mention in Flipsideof a punk band in New Orleans called Crawlspace. 3. Crawlspace Jr. from Arizona (Tucson, if I remember right). This was another one that Mike Snider saw somewhere, around '89. He gave me their address, and I wrote them a nice letter that began "Dear Son" and ended with "Love, Dad." I guess they had no sense of humor, because they didn't write back. 4. An organization called TLem Christian Music Resources has a band called Crawlspace in an extensive database, who supposedly released a CD called Shelterin 1993. A Christian Crawlspace?! 5. Crawlspace, a punk band from Rochester, New York, moved to Hollywood in 1995 and started playing gigs. I was kinda mean: I called a club they were playing, posed as a writer for a local fanzine, and asked for their address, saying I had written a favorable review of a show they did. Instead, I sent them a letter saying they had to change their name or I would sue. One of the guys called me, said he really liked the CD I sent, admitted he had just recently heard about us, and was all around pretty nice. If by some chance this erstwhile Crawlspacer reads this, I apologize for not being upfront. 6. Crawlspace, a "dark metal" band from Atlanta now known as Sevendust. The year after the Hollywood punk band changed their name, this band moved to L.A. and started doing shows! They got their name from John Wayne Gacey, because their manager/producer Jay Jay French (ex-Twisted Sister) told me so. When I got his initial phone call, he introduced himself as John French; at first I was excited because I thought it was Drumbo from Captain Beefheart's Magic Band! On an MTV website, it was said that a West Coast band (us) threatened "litigation" if the Atlanta band didn't change their name. Untrue! This was my offer to Jay Jay French: They could use the name if we could also continue using it, and they give us a percentage of all earnings, and $20,000 upfront. Mr. French never called back (although I would've sued, of course)! There is one track on a Mortal Kombat(pardon my french) soundtrack by this band using the name Crawlspace; is it too late to call my attorney and at least sue for bad taste?! 7. Somebody told me about a UK "death metal" band called Crawlspace. This was 1997, and I started making this list! I mean . . . who woulda thunk there would be so many bands using the name!? 8. My Own Victim, a thrash band from Kentucky, changed their name from Crawlspace. From their bio: "Once a contract was signed the band decided to change their name to the more original My Own Victim to once again separate them from other bands who shared the Crawlspace name." 9. Bobby Adams of Los Cincos told me when he was trying to get a band together as a teenager, the first name they were using before it really got started was Crawlspace. They found out about us, and changed it. I thought that was cool, because I likeLos Cincos! 10. The weirdest one of all, Phil Todd of Ashtray Navigations/Betley Welcomes Careful Drivers told me he saw a flyer for a local pub band called Crawlspace, apparently a cover band, playing in his hometown of Crewe (England). I wonder if somebody in the band is a plumber or electrician. 11. Crawlspace, a "dark" (isn't everything?) techno band, had a website I forgot to bookmark. I think they were from the UK; could it be the same as the "death metal" band at #7. Perhaps they "progressed"? 12. Crawlspace from Belgium, supposedly "hardcore." I saw a CD called Don't Get Mad, Get Evenlisted on eBay. I was told recently that they are very active. Yeah well, we were first, so fuck 'em. Don't get mad or even--just shrug and say, uh, "fuck 'em" till they infringe enough to call a lawyer. I put them on my e-mail list, and got a nasty message demanding to be removed. Whoa, dudes! 13. Crawlspace from Australia, a current band who claim Nirvana as an influence. Unfortunately, they are also ambitious, like Nirvana, and have released a full-length CD using the Crawlspace name. Their attitude has been "We are Crawlspace for the Australian market, and will deal with you if we ever get to the U.S." Pop-scum. Oddly enough, our first EP Silent Invisible Conversationwas released on an Australian label, Grown Up Wrong! (In nearby New Zealand, there's an outsider-improv-weirdo-punk label called Crawlspace Records!) 14. A punk band from Sacramento called Crawlspace existed for a couple years until disbanding in 2000. My initial contact with these goofs got the response that their name was "Crawlspace.." with two periods after the name, so it was different! They had the bad taste to play at least one gig in L.A. before breaking up. 15. Spotted on eBay in January 2000: "check it out! i almost forgot i had this!!! Before Disembodied, 3 of the members were in a band called CRAWLSPACE! this is their demo. this is original, not a copy and comes with lyrics. members of crawlspace went onto Disembodied and I Shot McKinley. This is a must for any Disembodied FAN. let me know if you're looking for any other rare disembodied stuff." Does this relate to some other Crawlspace mentioned above? I dunno. 16. I got this e-mail from Fred Holbrook in November 2001: "I ran across your site the other day and thought I'd add to the already rich history of the very cool name of Crawlspace. While in Idaho in 1989, I was in a little 3 piece cover band named, you guessed it, CrawlSpace. I'm the responsible party here, and oddly enough, I used the name pretty much for the same reasons you did. Anyway, I moved back to the High Desert (Apple Valley) in '93 and co-founded Fear of Change with Rob Lonsinger. But for a short period we used the name CrawlSpace, although we only played a handful of free gigs. In any case, I really enjoyed your site and it's nice to know that Crawlspace is in good hands." That was nice, huh? 17. Snail mail this time, from Slippy Town customer Joe Malinowski: "There was a country-punk band from New London, Connecticut in the late 1980s called Crawlspace. I am pretty sure they had an LP on a Connecticut-based label." Could this be the Crawlspace from Massachusetts, mentioned at the top of this page? Hmm. Send in yours today! |
