the SLIPPY TOWN
Kulchur Korner

The Allman Brothers Band live at Fillmore East video (1970) Grace and fire, bruthas 'n' muthas, real uncut beauty of the sort that doesn't really exist in 2003 timespace Amerika. NOT the same '70 show as got released by Grateful Dead on CD a few years yonder. "Dreams," "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," "Whipping Post." Fuh-fuh-fuck yeah. (I have no idea if this is in any way "available.")
The Magic Markers Live in Asheville, NC CDR (2003) Super primitive super groovy free rock from Louisville, Kentucky, from what looks to be a trio of 2 gals & 1 guy. Sounds not like "improv" (tho it's certainly improvised) but like "rock" that makes me also think the Southern locale has brought in, conscious or not, the blues theyself that so many folks do not hear any more (except wrongly). Good titles too: "Keliga & The Astronomer," "Dust of the Train to the Sun," and "The Goat Swing."
Muddy Waters / Howlin' Wolf / Buddy Guy / Sonny Boy Williamson -- Folk Festival of the Blues LP (1963) Loud, loose, powerful sounds recorded July 26, 1963 at the Copa Cabana Club in Chicago. The proceedings are opened by Muddy, Buddy, and Willie Dixon stompin' through "Wee Wee Baby," and then ya get four by Muddy, two each from Wolf and Buddy, and Sonny Boy II doing his classic "Bring It On Home." Buddy Guy is in his prime--singin' so sweet and rippin' the shit outta his axe. Released on the Chess subsidiary Argo Records. This is one of the first blues LPs I got when I was 12 or 13--bought from a blues auction list for $2 or $3 in 1970.
Suzi Quatro LP (1974) The first LP and no doubt pinnacle of Detroit-cum-English rocker Suzi Quatro. Producer-writers Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, who had already brought the Sweet to the world, put together two classic glitter-era hits "48 Crash" and "Can the Can" (included here), and then let Suzi run with her pseudo-biker pseudo-lesbo bubble-glam trip. It didn't get very far, sound-wise, beyond this album, but Ms. Q. and guitarist Len Tuckey did write solid rockers that fit the Chinn-Chapman mold: "Glycerine Queen," "Shine My Machine," "Skin Tight Skin," a couple more. There's also Suzi's dyke-rockin' version of the Beatles' "I Wanna Be Your Man," which is followed nicely by the other Chinn-Chapman song here, a cool bit of caveman-rock called "Primitive Love." Great stripped-down production on this slab--total rockin' but very 70s with groovy electric piano, phased guitar, occasional mellotron, even a spacey interlude. Suzi's next LP was a weak version of the first; then she went pop and somehow ended up on TV's HAPPY DAYS, before finally scoring a big U.S. hit that I have gladly forgotten. But in '73/'74, Suzi rocked!
Guitar Wolf -- Wolf Rock! LP (1993) I picked this up when it came out, on somebody's recommendation, but my head was too full of good LSD and magic mushrooms to dig a band draped in slaughtered cow skins playing Link Wray noise. These days, I'm a lot crankier, and listen to a lot more R&R than in 1993, so this overload stinkabilly from Tokyo sounds purty dang killer, especially considering its vintage. It certainly destroys anything the Cramps did after their second LP. As for my ears----you know how it is, always 10 years behind or 10 years ahead.
Carnival Rock movie (1958) This low-budget "teen" movie from Mr. Roger Corman features some mighty excellent rockabilly--the real raw, sweaty thang: two tunes by Bob Luman; Luman's backing band the Shadows (James Burton on lead guitar!) doing a great instrumental called "The Creep"; and future C&W star David Houston (two songs, including "Teen Age Frankie and Johnnie"!). Plus the Platters do "Remember When." And there's pseudo-rock from Susan Cabot and the Blockbusters' theme song. Even the pseudo stuff ain't bad. What is bad, though, is the soapy, tragic story that surrounds the wailin' sounds. Susan Cabot plays a sexy singer who rebuffs older carnival/club owner in favor of a younger stud, etc. It's pretty hard to pay attention to this stuff, but all-time groovy Dick Miller does give a brooding performance as the club owner's sidekick. This was produced and directed by Roger Corman for Howco Productions--a sign of things to come when he moved to AIP for slightly bigger budgets and far less turgid plots.
Albert Ayler LP (1964/1966) Released in 1990 by the Italian label Philology. The VIBRATIONS quartet (AA, Don Cherry, Gary Peacock, Sunny Murray) in a Copenhagen club, sounding much more anxious and sketchy than their studio sessions--a strange inversion of spirit that maybe hints at Albert's internal struggles. Side two at the 1966 Berlin Jazz Festival is a celebratory country-fried march, another mood swing as Ayler sings songs of heavenly joy. With Don Ayler (trumpet), Michel Sampson (violin), Beaver Harris (drums), and William Folwell (bass). Quite a wail!
Big Brother & the Holding Co. -- Live LP (1966) Big Bro live at California Hall in San Francisco on July 28, 1966--released in the 80s on a couple different labels, and no doubt by somebody on CD. Tuff drug-addled garage-blues, loose 'n free, aesthetically promiscuous, and with shared vocals before Janis became *star* of the group. James Gurley's leads aren't as pumped up here as on CHEAP THRILLS, but his shimmering Detroit-born guitar thang still occasionally moves well beyond any "Western" notion of music. If only we could all be there forever. Amen.
