AMOEBAS IN CHAOS
On to Mayday (Hardly Music) $15
1982 LP from Indiana art-damage punk/wave quartet, similar in many ways to other Hoosier groups like the Dancing Cigarettes and the Social Climbers. They were, in fact, vets of Gulcher Records' 1981 Red Snerts comp, so comparisons make sense. Strangled male vocals, blank-gen spoken femme vocals, plenty of synth sounds, dub touches, flashes of noise, angular structures borrowed from post-punk and reggae. Pretty swell. With lyric sheet.

THE ANGRY SAMOANS
"Different World" + 5 (self released) 12-inch EP $40
Private press 12-inch vinyl record, pressed in an edition of 100 in 1986. Plain white cover, with hand-stamped labels. This same material was released again in an edition of 300 (I think) for a 1986 tour, but with printed labels, not hand-stamped. Finally, this material was released for general consumption by PVC Records in 1987 under the title Yesterday Started Tomorrow. The songs: "Different World," "Electrocution," "It's Raining Today," "Unhinged," "Psych-Out 129," "Somebody To Love." Also comes with a one-sheet bio that was sent with promo copies.

THE BEATLES
Anthology 2 (Apple/Capitol) 3xLP $35
The long-gone vinyl equivalent of the "psychedelic" volume of this much-hyped series. I played the early take of "Tomorrow Never Knows" a couple years ago for a young friend, who thought it was a contemporary band using "lo-fi" recording techniques and a beatbox! When he found it was the Beatles with Ringo, he was stunned. And it
is a stunning cut. Some other great stuff too, mixed in with a few dorky "rarities" that nobody cares about.

UNREST
Imperial f.f.r.r. (No. 6 Records/TeenBeat/Ajax) $12
Highly listenable modern ('92) non-precious pop from Arlington, Virginia. Full of hypnotic melodies, beautiful vocals (most by guys!), hooks subtle enough for mid-60s Brian Wilson or Big Star, flashes of the Velvets strained through the early Feelies, easy transitions to hiphop-style grooves and experimental interludes, clean production that's never sterile. Way too good to be popular. (sigh) Out of print on vinyl.
