MINMAE
Since Before Inertia (Tape Mountain) CDR $9
Minmae is a one-man overdubbed "band" that is, in fact, Mr. Sean Brooks of Portland, Oregon. Sean cops to being influenced by Willie Nelson, Wire, Cat Power, Smog, and Hood. Most of the material on his disc is offered up as simple guitar tunes, with sparse backing, but with a dense haze surrounding it all. Sean's vocals are straight up and mostly very unaffected; not unlike Syd Barrett or Nick Drake, but without the sense of impending nervous breakdown. As the disc moves along, the Minmae songbook is broken up with more experimental tracks, pulling in fragments of psych-out guitar, beatbox wheezing that sounds like early industrial stuff, and minimal-like non-song space.

NEGATIVLAND
Deathsentences of the Polished and Structurally Weak (Seeland) CD + book $20
Negativland makes a full disc of noise drone electroacoustic whatsis--and it sounds real good. They kinda fake you out with a bit of radio talk mixed very low on the first track, but the whole disc shifts waves wiggles in what feels like a huge cavern of nonstop random sounds--not hectic or even irritating (by my standards!) but unending in mutation. The accompanying book ends up being nicely connected to the disc, once you start lookin', with full-color photos of wrecked cars (mostly) and found letters/notes/grocery lists (mostly). Funny, touching, inspired, stupid--what more could you want? I dig. Negativland says: "DEATHSENTENCES OF THE POLISHED AND STRUCTURALLY WEAK is a 6 by 12 inch 64-page full-color book which comes with a 45-minute CD soundtrack. Packaged inside of a large die-cut automotive courtesy envelope, this book is a poignant, voyeuristic, disturbing, and occasionally funny glimpse into lives which may be very different from your own . . . or eerily similar. The CD, the first studio full-length by Negativland since 1997, is a meticulously layered, ever-shifting electro-acoustic soundscape created to accompany the book. No bass lines, no melody, no dialogue, no singing, no beat--the sound of Negativland's recording studio being destroyed in a car crash." Released 2002.

ONQ/THE COLOURS SEEN FROM BEHIND
Onq Plays the Colours Seen from Behind Play Onq (Ouzel Records; Italy)
CDR EP $9
Two cuts by each artist; sixteen minutes total. Downer-folk-pop singer Onq's "Light Sleep" is a droney folk-strum tune; the Colours Seen from Behind cover it as a burblin' beatboxin' psych-pop-breakdown. Then the Colours Seen from Behind contribute their own original, "The Dreamer," a dark-humored piece, blowtorched in a post-Residents/industrial manner. Onq, in turn, does the same song in his very down style, with whispered vocals, austere piano, and tinny electric guitar. |

PENGO
Pengo Climbs the Holy Mountain (Carbon Records) $8
"a document of Pengo‘s 5th live performance ... The performance consisted of a live musical accompaniment to the first 31 minutes of Alejandro Jodorowsky‘s film The Holy Mountain. The first 31 minutes of The Holy Mountain are without dialog. This is the section of the film they chose to play along with. This portion of the film is also considerably less linear then the rest of the film. This perfectly suited Pengo‘s music making aesthetic. The only thing constant is continual change. There are recurring symbols in the film that pass by so fast that they are almost subliminal to the viewer."

pexbaA (Disposable Thumb Recordings) CDR $15
Aavant-rock combo from Brazil. They walk a thin line between composition and improv, with odd rhythmic gestures and jazz-like playing. They have a disciplined-yet-free style that reminds me of Czech bands like DG-307 and MCH Band during their most creative periods. But you can also hear Ubu, Beefheart & Zappa, early absurdist-punk vocals, horn a la Don Cherry, a bit of South American bounce, etc. Out of print--Disposable Thumb Recordings is defunct.

PRINCE KRAUS
Emily (Celebrate Psi Phenomenon; New Zealand) CDR $25
Campbell Kneale: "Summoning all the power of the Masonic illuminati, New Zealand's Prince Kraus channels his blinding vision through a synthesized 'all-seeing-eye' laying waste to planet earth and burying its memory in the billowing sands of time. Er...wow, man. A scorching masterpiece of squarking organ, hooting bird orchestras, and war movie beats. Are these the rawest, unreleased demos of The Residents' (unmade) remake of Lawrence of Arabia? Or perhaps evidence of an ancient Egyptian 'outsider-scene'?" Out of print from the label.

PRISCILLA
Ouzel Dead File #3: Priscilla 1997-1998 (Ouzel Records; Italy) CDR $9
From the Ouzel archives come the complete works of this short-lived Italian band. Priscilla was a cool post-Sonic Youth/post-post-punk combo with the focus on noisy guitars and droney tunes. From their split came down-folk singer-songwriter Onq and the band Morose. Almost an hour of music here. |
